Services and Calendar

St Nicholas Church, Thames Ditton

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days before Easter. It falls on a different date each year, being dependent on the date of Easter.

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.

Lent is season of fasting and prayer before Easter. The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, culminating in Easter.

Lent is marked by fasting, both from foods and festivities, and by other acts of penance. Today, some people give up a vice of theirs, add something that will bring them closer to God, and often give the time or money spent doing that to charitable purposes or organizations.

If you have resolved to give up, say, chocolate, you may be relieved to know that some people consider that technically the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter are not Lent days and therefore you might feel able to have chocolate on Sunday. However many, in all conscience, don’t make use of this cop-out and others think it less painful to give up altogether during lent!
